Recently recieved a 21 ft Cobalt Cuddy, trailer, cover, the works for free. Problem is it was sitting covered in storage for almost 5 years. Water got in carb and valve chambers, so I took the carb apart cleaned reasembled, took intake manifold off, cleaned it out and valve chambers cleaned and sprayed with wd. Replaced intake manifold gasket, spark plugs, and adjusted timing(8 BTDC)with engine turning from starter motor. Took float assembly off gas tank(50 gall tank) about 30 gal of fuel inside, smelled like gas and no gum on it. Siphened some out and ignited a little on driveway, it ignites. Engine will crank but will not pick up and turn over. Most I get is a pop now and then with some blowback through the carb. Suggestions? I have some things I am going to try.

Try moving the distributor around a little bit (if it sounds better keep going) while cranking the motor and see what happens. I believe popping though the carb is a timing or a valve thing. Lets hope it is the first.

I'd change the gas out, 5 years is a long time. Maybe run off a smaller portable tank with new gas.

Make sure the dist is not in backwards, meaning off 180 degrees. It will still throw a timing light in the right place, but it will be on the exhaust stroke instead of the power stroke. Sounds like it might be the problem, as the engine is firing out the carb instead of the exhaust. You had to take the distributor off to remove the intake, right?

Yah I believe the ditributor is fine, rotor contact was pointing at # 1 cylinder contact before replacing cap and doing a rough timing. I actually got some clean gas in a 2 gallon tank I will try soon and see if that works. Fuel filter is pretty clean and water seperator was replaced about 30 hours runtime before storage so I am assuming that is ok too. I might have a problem with the exaust manifolds, havent taken tham off to check, but I have no reason to think those might be plugged

Oh, and on replacing the gas.(hopefully that will be the issue, and not the valves) although boat was free and I am pretty mechanically inclined so performing a valve replacement over the winter would be a good learning experience anyhow.

Any ideas where I could get rid of 30 gallons of 4-5 yr old gas? The old dilute 1 gallon at a time in a full tank in your car would take the better part of a year or so!

30 gallons out of a 50 gallon tank leaves plenty of room for condensation. My guess is that there is water in the fuel. Remove the separator and pour the gas that was in it into a clean, clear container and see if there is any water. (Water will settle to bottom) Try the clean fuel.

Double check the distributor alignment (try removing it and re-installing 180 degrees). Let us know.

Ill try that, I am going on vacation soon for a week or 2, so I will attempt the clean gas solution this evening. Is there a prefered process to running off a seperate container of clean fuel? I was going to 1)take the high voltage lead off distributor, ground it.2) take fuel line out of carb. 3)take line from outlet on water seperator leading to fuel pump and place it in clean tank. 4)crank over to run old fuel out of pickup line and fuel pump.5)reatach fuel lines and high voltage lead and give it a go.

Poured out the water seperator filtr into clear container, and I didnt see anything immediate to indicate water seperation, however it was very tea colored, I am assuming it has oxidized heavily and even though it ignited on driveway and smells like gas, it could be the issue. I will try running clean gas from seperate container through engine and see what happens.

Re: GM OMC 225 Starting

Thanks, I dont think my problem is the gas, as I am running clean fuel through the engine and having the same issues. However after much troubleshooting and a little duh, what the hell factoring, everything points to the timing being excatly 180 degrees off, I turned the engine over with the starter without the distributor installed and I think I put it back in excactly 180 degrees off, which is easy to do, and the engine is sparking during the exaust stroke which isnt going to do anyone any favors, I will switch it around when I get home and see if that is it.
