i want to ask something :
From my thermostat housing (oem#78984 with the 8 hoses) it was missing the cork gasket and the sleeve.Since my acces to spare parts is a little difficult may you tell that without them the only problem would be that the engine would get warm more difficulty since the absence of them would allow a little more water to pass to the exit when thermostat closed ?

Re: gm305 1978 thermostat question

Hi Sarantis,.....

I haven't answered,... Because I'm not Sure......

I Believe,.... That you could probably get away without the Cork Gasket, If you use some sort of Sealant, or just cut a gasket out of some paperboard, or rubber maybe.....

But,... I also believe that that Sleeve is Very Necessary.... It directs the flow of water....
Without it, I Think the motor would be bypassed,+ all the water would just run out the risers.....

But I don't know that for Sure..........

Maybe Don, or RP, or somebody more knowledgeable will see this,+ Answer.....;)

ok i agree that the sleeve holds the thermostat down but what would help me is to know if the engine would work warmer or cooler with the thermostat not being tight to the round base of thermostat housing.

Don't have a clue. I don't put things together with missing parts just to see what happens.
You now know what it's doing with the parts missing. Get the parts and see if it woirks. Then you will know. I would have to assume it needs to be in there for some reason.
