My hockey team is in my middle of the state playdowns, we had a game last night, one this morning and another tonight.

This morning in the 1st period I took a slap shot on the foot, it hit the outside of me right foot, right where the "knob" is. I made it to the bench.

We didn't really have the players for me to sit out, I was needed. The coach really wanted me to try to skate on it, its was painfull as all hell when I put weaght on it. I'm a defence men and was able to limp threw the rest of the game, I just looked for passes a lot so I didn't have to skate is much at normal. Once I got the skate off my right ancle was all puffed up, I had to hop out of the rink.

Now that I'm home I've got it up and have ice on it, but I still can't put any presure on it. My family thinks I should have it looked at, I'm not going unless I'm forced.

What do you think?
Whats the best way to tell if I need a Doc or not?

Thanks in advance,
Ryan.

Ahoy, Ryan.

If it puffs up and hurts when you put weight on it it might be a fracture.

The way to tell that you should go to the Doc is when your parents want you to go.

Good luck Amigo. :)

Ryan – it doesn’t really matter. If something is seriously wrong, you will end up at the doc sooner or later. On the other hand, going to the doc now may provide you will advice on how to get it healed sooner and without causing any other problems along the way. Btw, this is where doctors are really at their best, injuries and emergency medicine.

Ryan:

JB and rabbit are correct. Take care of it now and it won't bother you when you hit your 40's.

When I was 14 I injured an ankle playing basketball and because I was prone to these injuries, we put off going to the doctor. We decided to go after 3 days and the ankle had turned a purple/black color. Needless to say, I had rammed my shin bone thorough my foot and it had started to set and heal. The doctor had to re-break the bone (no anesthesia). To this day I experience severe pain in this ankle when I work it too much.

Add to this the countless injuries received playing high school and college football, pick up games, work, and just plain screwing around that did not receive medical treatment (the team needed me, my employer needed me, I did not have the money) and you have a man in his mid-40's that suffers pain almost continually.

Being a man is doing the right thing, not neccessarily the "strong" thing. See a doctor.

Hey Ryan my boy also plays hockey and his best friend (who was amazing at any sport he played) hurt his knee, now at the time he thought it wasnt that bad so he didnt go to the doctor right away but, it has since taken him out of any sports because even though it didnt hurt that bad at first it was a serious injury. He has had to have surgery and it will never be the same. Go to the Doc.....better safe than sorry.

if its broken, and it heals incorrectly, the fix is to have it rebroken  and set properly

that would sure suck!

Re: Go to the Doc or not?

I know, Commander McBraggg

I've been their, last year I boke a done in my hand and waited a two days before going to the doctor, they had to rebreak it and set it, no fun.

I had neabor look at it, she's a nurse. She says nothing is broken, she made me move it all around while holding my knee. I can put all my weaight on it if I stay on one place, just painfull to walk normal, nothings broke or fractured.

I'll just wait it out, going the the doctor I'll have to wait for four hours to even get looked at, even thought you have insurance that pays for most of it, you still have to pay a "entrance fee" of 50bucks to get someone to look at you, screw that.

Ryann just because you can walk a little bit on it don't mean it aint broke. I worked a whole day with a broken bone in my arm and never knew it was broke till my wife talked me into going to see the doc. I am glad I did.

Go to the doctor, you would be very foolish not to.

Re: Go to the Doc or not?

I didn't think my ankle was broken either, but it was.

Skating on an ankle in that condition could have serious lifelong consequences.

My cousin sprained her ankle, she kept playing and playin on it, tennis. Ended up doing serious damage. She was then in a NON-walking cast, for 6 weeks.

Get it checked out.
Buy yourself a pair of crutches even if you don't need them.
Then hang out with the cheerleaders. :) :D

Re: Go to the Doc or not?

Ryan, the last (second) time I broke my foot I walked about 2 miles out of the woods to my car, then drove to the Doc. Cost me an extra 60 days in a cast.

Mobility is not out of the question if you are stubborn enough to try it, and I know you well enough to use the term correctly. ;)

Ryan T. If after the initial shock of the hit wears off, you still cannot walk on it without pain, there is a VERY good chance you either have a fracture, a strain, or a sprain. There a four field tests to check for a broken foot and pain while bearing weight is one of them. The others are too complicated to explain here, but I would definitely have it x-rayed.

Sorry guys.
-----------------------------------------------

Young man, it's your foot, it's your pain and it's your risk to take, you have been given lots of good advice by some who have had prior experience and first hand knowledge of similar mishaps, however, whatever you so choose to do,the decision remains yours to make.

oh, to be young and indestructable again...
dude, as a fellow hockey player for many yrs.,
go and make sure it's not a fracture! if it is
broke and don't heal right, you'll never walk
right the rest of your life, nevermind play
hockey!

Re: Go to the Doc or not?

I went last night, took three hours to even get someone to look at it.

They X-rayed, the smaller of the two bones go's from my lower leg to me anckel was fractured at the base where it meets with the foot, from skateing on it it got moved to the side, too.

I went back this morning to have it "set" it actaully wasn't that painfull, I did it without any pain killers, too.

They put a warm fiberglass thingey that gets hard on it and wraped it. They don't want me putting any weaight on it for now, next week I have to go back again.
