Going from hydraulic steering to push pull

I bought a 2001 150 hp mercury that was originally used with hydraulic steering. I put the motor on a boat that has the push pull steering with two cables but only hooked up one to the motor. It steers but is extremely loose and if i let go of the wheel it would spin out of control. Is this because both steering cables need to be hooked up?

welcome to iboats..... :D

If you let go of a steering wheel normally the boat will go into a full tight turn...... That is somewhat normal. How is your trim tab adjusted?

Why did you only hook one cable?

Yes BOTH cables need to be connected, Merc sold a kit just for that but I bet it's NLA. And yes it's dangerous without both hooked up

You could have a stretched cable causing the looseness.
I've had good results with my Teleflex NFB system which is 4 turns lock to lock and doesn't pull to the right

my 70 was hydro and now is with the pulleys. mine is some what loose but not too bad.

the reason it might steer out of control is because the motor is not cenetered.
