I'd like to replace my 2.5L Mercruiser engine that is mounted to a pre-alpha drive and would like to replace it with a 3.0. (The 2.5L engine has some serious issues)

What's the going rate for used 3.0 (not rebuilt just used)? I live in the northeast if that makes a difference.

Also, I presume you want to see the engine running, do a compression test, and check the oil. Is there anything else that should/can be done to minimize the chances of a cracked block or other some other hard to detect issue.

I know you have to assume a certain amount of risk when buying used from a private party -- just trying to buy smartly.

Thanks,

Dan

Re: Going price for a used 3.0

for a complete, good condition bobtail, about $1200 to $1700 around my place (where there is winter), which is the same as or more than an old tired boat with a good running 3.0. The higher price will be for a motor that's on a skid with a battery hooked up ready to demonstrate with an oil pressure gauge fitted.

3.0 is probably the most popular marine engine for i/o's ever, coupled with it's typical owner- the new boater who is the least likely understand winterizing creates a supply vs. demand that pumps the price around here.

most 3.0's crack near the head to block parting line up under the manifold. A bright flashlight best tool. inspect the port side of the block well visually.

having your 2.5 peripherals, you might look for Yamaha, OMC and Volvo Penta 3.0s as well as Merc

You might need a manifold depending on which one your 2.5 has, and it's condition, but those manufacturers all used the 3.0 as well
