Going to change out fuel pump diaphram, why should i try and brake platic thingy then

reinsert the broken plastic back in check valve? Im worried about doing this as it might damage the plastic clear thingy. The last time i did this i belive i just cut the white insert with razor then poped back in.

they tell in the instructions to brake the stem while inside the valve i could get it to brake while wiggling and backed off cut that sucker with razor taped it back in.
