1. Sunbird 1988 17 CUDDY

Keep looking. 2.3L Ford, only used a few years and only by OMC, very few parts available, omc drive, OMC out of buisness since 98.

2. Wellcraft 1985 192 american

Keep looking. The 470 has lots of built in issues, just search this forum for 470. The engine runs fine, but things like open deck block, Merc only aluminum block Ford 460 head, cam shaft seal leaks, a good overheat almost a sure head gasket replacement, then there is the charging system, junk from the beginning, can't tell if this one was converted already or not.
When they are running and in good shape, they are a great motor with lots of torque and power, buy built in defects make it a problem. Especially if you don't really like being a mechanic.

Look at my crystal ball in my avatar.

If I had to choose one over the other, it would be the Mercruiser. At least they still exist.

You loose either way you go. Give him the information and let him make the decision. Then you can't be blamed for it when it dies.

Well, on 25+ year old boats, better have the transom and stringers checked first or a new motor may be the least of your dads' issues.....

Tell pops to keep looking, Avoid OMC & the merc 470 as was stated above. There are a ton of boats out there with merc v6 & v8 drivetrains. Don't just buy it to buy it.
