Looking at purchasing a 94' 2300 SR for my first boat. Any comments on Maxum or this particular model would be appreciated. Any problem areas I should be aware of? Any negative experiences? I had the 5.7L Mercruiser and Alpha drive checked by a dealer and he said compression was good on the engine and the outdrive was fine. Any other area on the boat I should have checked out? Thanks.

Re: Good Boat?

maxum is one step up from entry level boat. good boats. check for the ususal, soft spots on the floor, rubber mallot and tap transom for hollow sound. hollow is rot.

when looking require a test drive of 1 hour, check the floor for any soft spots, tilt the engine all the way up, and shake hell out of the engine up and down, watch the transom, there should not be any flex. compression check on the engine, the higher over 100 psi the better, and the cylinders should be within 10 % of each other. check the lower unit oil for water. remove the bottom drain plug, if milky it has water in it.

Re: Good Boat?

thanks tashasdaddy, i've got a test drive scheduled for this weekend. i'll be sure to bring the mallet. the owner of the boat (my neighbor) said there was a small soft spot in the floor right in front of the engine cover. they had it repaired and i didn't find any other soft spots. the boat looks really nice and well maintained. should i be concerned about the repaired soft spot?

Re: Good Boat?

If the shop said the compression was good, what does that mean? I'd want to see the numbers and acutally witness the test.

Re: Good Boat?

before i got my boat. i had them do a compression test. it passed. had them do a drive pressure and vac test. it passed. went out on a test run. 1.5 hrs. let the dealer beat my poor boat to death. wot, dealer was gettin off, havein a lot of fun. nice ol fella. 60+ish. lateeda. had him do the same test in ft. of me after the test drive. same results for compression and drive. that seemed resonable to me.....sold..

as for the soft spot. look for rot juice drippin out the drain hole, or a rot juice stain down from the drain.....that's a sure sign....

as fer one step up from bildgeliner. well. i was just out today with my buddy in his bildgeliner. got himself a maybe 28 gal. fuel tank. cool, he made the run tonight and got himself 28.9 gal. at the end of the day....darn. he didn't run out of fuel...he aint had no issues with his 00 substandard bayliner......a step below a maxim......a 350 w/gen 2 drive is the same behind a maxim or a crownline i'd think......
