9.5 004.jpg9.5 005.jpg9.5 002.jpg9.5 003.jpg9.5 001.jpgI bought 2 outboards this morning for a hundred bucks each, a 1966 Johnson 9.5 (MQ12A) and a 1972 Evinrude 9.5 (9222M) The motors are complete, unmolested and are in extremely good condition. Prior to actually seeing the motors, the plan was to make one good one out of the two but given their condition, I cant bring myself to cannibalize one of them. The seller was an older gent who aquired them from his late brother's estate, I was told they were running when put into storage several years ago. I plan on following the "Waking a sleeping outboard" procedure and in fact I've already started. So far I know that I need coils for them since they are all severly cracked and of course Ill need water pump impellers too. Based upon my research 1964 - 1973 all used the same coils but the BRP catalog says they are obsolete. Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket brand? (OE part number is 0580416)
I expect Ill be asking more than a few questions during the restoration of these old motors and I have to tell you I'm hyped at the prospect of having a couple of perfect running great looking old motors when I'm done.
Ill post a few pics when the wife gets home with the camera but for now advice on the coils would be appreciated.
Pics now added... The first one is for Canadians over 45 Who remember Simpsons dept stores. It's an old Simpson Sears label!
Cheers,

Steve.

I can't help on the coils any, but I picked one of these up last month as my first project, and it is a good motor because it is easy to work on. Mine's a 1965 Evinrude 9.5.

Re: Good deal on a couple of old 9.5s but...

I have another question that I forgot to ask in my original post... Will cracked coils cause weak spark or do they simply work or not work? The reason I ask is that I do have spark on the 66 and I disassembled and cleaned the carb but I still cant get it to fire.
Just thinking maybe my spark is weak. I have a makeshift spark tester but dont know how far it should jump on one of these oldies.

the cracked coils arent worth the headache....im working on a 1958 johnson, that had good spark on one plug, none on the other...both coils were nasty, but one worked. dont even waste your time pulling the cord until you refresh the ignition. jmo

I hear ya.
I'm going to Boston in 2 weeks to visit the brother in law so Ill order the coils and have them shipped to his address.
Think I should order up points and condensers too?

Never mind, I just saw how cheap they were and went ahead and ordered coils, points and condensers. 4 of each cost me $129.00.
