Anyone know of any web sites that give good, possbily illustrated information, on electrical wiring, following general building codes?

Looking for ideas on the proper way to wire a small garage and barn.

Thanks

You'll want the National Electrical Code. Also a locality or city may require it's own specific upgrades to the National Code such as the "New York City Eletrical Code".

Hope this helps.

Home Depot, Menards, and Lowes sell residential wiring code books. Local library will have them, also, if you only needs selected information.

Ditto on this. I bought a very good book from home depot on home wiring and then combined this with the local electrical code 'how to' book. Between the two of them its simplified many things.
Important Note: if you wire this stuff yourself be aware of how it may affect your insurance.:)

I often check on Sam Goldwasser when I have a question about things electrical. He has a pretty extensive website or at least his links to articles almost always lead me to something that helps me out in one way or another. This is a good site to bookmark as well.Ron G

Thanks for the replies.

Basically, the garage has older 2-wire overhead service and the small barn had (disconnected) 2-wire service.

I'd rather not completely rewire them, since they will be torn down in the next year or so.

My goal is to discern if the original wiring is installed correctly, replace any deteriorated wire/switches and then add proper grounding.

If these buildings have stood for some time and are going to be torn down in a year or two, I'd just increase the insurance on them and hope for the best, know what I mean?:D

I hear ya! The barn has a real nice lean, thanks to 130 years of west winds. Waiting for the big gust ;)

Need to use it a bit longer, as we are sectioning off part of it for a hen house. We'll need enough electrical juice for lights and heat lamps.
