SBN, been thinking about 2004 get together, how to increase attendance, etc.

Any idea on dates? Spring, summer, fall.
Before school starts? Late Sept again?

I'm thinking it would help if people had as much advance notice as possible, so they can plan vacation time, etc. I for one have to put in for my vacation in January.

Are there family type attractions in the area?
Could a family make this a destination?
Camping?
Motels? Cheap / pricey?
What type of fishing does the lake offer?
I did a google search and checked out a few sites, but they didn't offer much info.

If you pick a date, then people that are interested can hold the date open.

SBN, are you close to Lake Cumberland?
Me and my buddies usually try to get down there in May for our annual "Test & Tune". Mind you, we don't fish, but we have our run of the lake... from Burnside to 76 Falls! This year was a "wash" because of the high water and too much debris in the water.
When we go, we stay in a little motel in Monticello, Anchor Inn I think, about 5 miles from Conley Bottom ramp. You might consider there!?
Brian
PS, the area's 'dry' so it's BYOB.

All,

I'd like to go but that's over 2000 miles (one way) for me and farther for our freinds on the west coast.

Knoxville is NOT an easy place to get to, by air.

Have fun.

Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are fairly close to Watts Bar. Dollywood and Dolly's Splash Country are pretty popular vacation spots here. There's plenty to do, but be sure to bring a fat wallet because nothing is cheap in those parts. You could also take a scenic ride through the Smokeys and go to Cade's Cove. We saw a mother bear and her cubs last time we went. We got "up close and personal" and snapped some pics. A little dangerous but worth it. Also, if it's during the summer months, you can go tubing down the Little River in Townsend, TN. Townsend is actually in the Smokies. They rent the tubes for like $5.00 each for all day long. They'll even shuttle you to a starting point if you want. It's a little dangerous, but it's fun. Just be sure that you scout out the route first. You don't want any surprises ;) . Don't start out too far upstream because there is a waterfall and a few other really rough spots. Be sure to bring the camera because it's really pretty. We usually start out about a mile or two past the split to Cade's Cove going towards Gatlinburg. You can also go hiking in the Smokeys. They have ATV's that you can ride in some areas too. They have set trails and usually do it as a tour. As far as hotels in the pigeon forge area go, I've seen them get as low as $20.00 a night at some times in the year, but they vary a lot. The traffic is pretty bad in the busiest seasons, but they have a pretty good trolly system up there. If it was me and I could afford it, I would try to take a week and do the get together and go to the places I mentioned. It could be a nice vacation in my opinion. I live here though so it's not as thrilling as it would be for someone who isn't used to seeing that sorta thing. There's also Tuckaleechy Caverns as well as a few others that give tours. I think some of them give "extreme" tours also. You have to have a pretty good size crowd, but they give you helmets with lights and you actually get down and dirty and inch your way through the tight spots.

James

djohns,

Knoxville's not easy to get to by air? Is it just expensive or do they not have many flights from your neck of the woods. McGhee Tyson International airport (TYS) is in Knoxville.

one and only time I was in Knoxville visited Smokey Mountain Knife Works---very cool--most enjoyed the "prison shank" display--knives and weapons made by convicts that jailers had confiscated---pretty creative stuff---
