I recently aquired my first boat that has a Chrysler 70 hp motor on it. From my research, this motor was made in the 70's. I would mainly use it for fishing/trolling, but would occasionally like to pull the kids on a tube. Is this a good motor? Any problems/issue's to be aware of with it? Is it a problem trolling with this make & size of motor?
The reasons for my questions is I was told by somebody here at work that I can ruin this Chrysler motor by idleing it for extended periods or trolling. Just wanted to get opinons from knowlegable people on this motor. THANKS

Lazy, If it's in good shape and it runs good, go for it. As far as trolling. I would recommend that you find yourself a good 4-6 hp kicker/trolling motor. You should be able to find a decent one for around $300.00. I don't know about ruining your 70 at lower rpms but I don't think it's particularly good for it or any large outboard. I've always used my main engines to transport me to the fishing grounds, then I fire up the trolling motor for fishing. It's also good to have a backup motor when you're a long way from home. I own a 50h Chrysler and I really like it. Go through that 70, there's a thread on here laying it out, and I'll bet that engine will last you a long time.

Re: Good motor -> Chrysler 70 hp???

I've got a 1969 70 hp, model 7071. Mine sat for well over 20 years when I got her a couple of years ago with the old Valiant she came attached to! Anyway, mine needed the points cleaned/adjusted, and a CD box to start. I've rebuilt all three carbs, the fuel pump, set the timing, replaced the waterpump impellar, installed a lower unit seal kit and put in new LU oil. Also installed new head gasket, water jacket gasket, plugs, wires etc. (All with a LOT of help from this board!) I can go out right now, put fresh fuel in the tank, pump the primer bulb a few times and she will start and idle beautifully all day long in a container of water. Having said all that, I do know that these outboards were designed for WOT operation and I would imagine that she will carbon up quickly if you run her at low RPM's for an extended period of time. FWIW, I love my 70hp outboard and the fact it is old, simple, and not many folks run 'em anymore.
If your's is solid, get a manual, check the basics and do a little maintenance and I'm sure that you'll be a happy camper...

they do not have a good reputation around where I live. I would not sink a pile of cash into that motor if it were me. But many people in this forum seem to love fixing up old motors..you can find a 80s model 70 hp outboard around here in running condition for $500-1000.
