I'm fairly good with mechanical stuff, but I've never done anything with carburetors other than take them apart to degunk them. I think I'm going to need to do an actual rebuild on Grandad's 65 Sportwin 9.5 and I didn't really know how to begin. Is there a good book or online tutorial one of you can recommend on carb rebuilding? I need help from the ground up with dummy level questions like: "what's that little silver cup thingie, what's behind it and how do I take it out?"

I'm willing to buy the service manual if it provides that level of detail, but I hate to drop $40 on a book that only tells me stuff I've already figured out. Sadly, the only person I know personally who has this kind of skill is an older uncle who lives a long way away. I hate to go bug him because I think the whole family already wears him out fixing their mowers and weed eaters.

Any advice on where I can learn the basics would be much appreciated.

either ebay or outboardbooks.com...would be a source for a workshop factory manual..not clymer or seloc...marineengine.com...has the parts diagrams for a 1965 9.5 hp...the brp dealer may have the carb kits for it I don't know...otherwise it's aftermarket...from looking at the parts diagram, you've picked a tough one to start on...I'd definitely recommend the factory manual...as well as taking pics of all linkages, hose routings, etc...before beginning..you'll learn a lot....
