Tylerin – there is a book written about the death of your friend “The Death of Common Sense: How Law Is Suffocating America” by Philip Howard. Read it and you will never look at your government the same. Probably leave you shaking head, wonder what the …

Hi Tylerin,

seen it before but it never stops having a massive impact on me, the truth has a nasty way on infusing itself into those who would readily admit to frailty. It is an unfortunate reflection of society, which is us.....yes us. We somehow always seem to apportion blame onto others.

As a pastor I once was privelaged enough to listen to said "We live in the age of the alibi........ it's always someone else's fault".

Cheers
Andrew

Re: Goodbye old friend

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement
This is an incredible misrepresentation of what happened. It borderlines on an outright lie. I understand it is presented in distortion to market an agenda, but it is deceptive, nonetheless.

1-It wasn’t a “bit” of coffee…it was the whole cup.
2-She did not know the coffee was hot enough to remove flesh from the bone.
3-She sustained 3rd degree burns on both inner thighs. 3rd degree!!! That means the flesh was literally burned off her body.
4-The ‘huge settlement’ wasn’t. For whatever reason, ‘reasonable’ awards require ‘shooting for the stars in hopes of hitting the moon’. She won the case and initial award of $1 million+ (the stars)…but the case closed significantly lower (the moon)…she basically got nothing beyond atty fees (the ozone?).

All-in-all, I think she got off lucky with painful burns and permanent scarring on her thighs. I shutter to think what would have happened if she managed to take a sip of that scolding liquid. Nothing that hot should ever be handed to anyone under the pretext it is consumable.

Fwiw, that lawsuit set precedence for safety concerns from all retailers of coffee. You (me and everyone else that hits Starbucks, or equivalent) are safer as a result of it.

Who spilled the coffee?

Usually you add cream, take a sip, blow on it...
Its hot coffee. It should be hot.
I suppose labels should appear on iced tea containers "beware you may get an ice-cream headache"? ;)

My dog loves ice cream. I’ve been experimenting with this. So far he shows no signs of discomfort, no matter how much or how fast I feed it to him. :)
