Like i stated before i sometimes like to use this forum to just chat with fellow boaters. An odd thought went through my head after reading the VP reliabilty advice question. I absolutely am on board with their reliability. But i worked in an Automotive machine shop when i was a pup and we got alot of Volvos in there for rework. I kind of judged motors by how many and what types we got as to their longevity. We got alot of volvos and no Hondas and Toyotas (this was an auto machine shop) Any ideas on why they can build such strong marine setups and weak automotive? Were they once a marine co. that turned to autos? Are they 2 diff co.? Just wondering?

Re: Goofy question

You don't see too many Volvo Penta outdrives in the automotive side, the engines (4 cylinder and inline 6) used up until 1993 were Volvo automotive engines converted to marine. All the V6 & V8 engines have always been GM. From 94 on, even the 4 cylinder engines are GM. Except a few Fords thrown in while Volvo and OMC were in the joint venture.

Since this really isn't a maintenance or repair question, I'm going to put it over in the Boat topics and questions forum for opinions.

I don't much about VP but I've had 2 Volvo autos and they aew awesome. They don't break if you maintain them. They are as good as any Toy, Benz, or anything else.

It IS however, an engine topic.....

It doesn't appear that the older Volvo marine engines (excluding the diesels) are all that great either.

Even in the 80's Volvo cars, the diesels weren't Volvo..... They were Volkswagon engines.

Having said all that....... Any modern engine will last longer than you need it to, if it's just maintained properly.

Agreed. We are on our third - S70 then S40 now XC90 V8.

We are on our first VP marine set up. So far, so good. I do have a leak somewhere in both drives which I intend to find in the next week or so. I get the feeling the last owner didn't put in as much maintenance effort as I would have, or he didn't check up on the work that was supposedly done. For example, when we bought the boat in May we were told that it had been winterized last fall and the oil had been changed. However, after we got it home I had the oil changed anyway. The filters were marked 55 hours, 10/02!

Re: Goofy question

Volvo Penta and the Volvo car company have nothing to do with each other since 1982.
