Google Chrome on Vista - Slow as molasses...

Hey guys, I've been using Chrome on my old (Acer) Vista laptop for a long time now without problems. But in the last few days I've found that it's been slow to respond to my mouse. Scroll bar sometimes takes two left clicks to begin moving, pages seem to take longer to load - all in all, it's just slower. Strangely enough, the problem has been most noticeable on this forum...!

Firefox works okay. Even my old copy of Netscape Navigator works as it always has. It's specific to this Google Chrome app. Virus scan changed nothing.

Suggestions?

If this is a sudden problem try dumping your cookies and empty the cache.

Another step is to do a Restore to an earlier point when you know it was working such as a week prior etc.

I do agree that it is probably time for you to move up from Vista.

Vista, needs to go. The longer you run it, the slower things are going to get, until it just won't run anylonger.

Dump vista and chrome and install Ubuntu, it uses Firefox for browser and will run great on that old acer. After you get used to Linux install "Wine" and you can run Windows software. Kiss microsoft goodbye and never look back.

bigdee, if you are installing wine to run windows software, then you are not "Kissing" microsoft goodbye forever, running windows software is looking back.

I very seldom use wine but it is there if I need it. And when running programs in wine you are not using Ms to run it. Linux has about any type of software you would ever need. I use it to run Auto cad but Linux "LibreCad" is a good cad program. LibreOffice is compatible and = to Ms office suite. The best part is all this stuff is FREE!

Only problem is that it won't be supported with updates after 4/14.

I guess Vista is OK now if you have all the patches, updates and compatible drivers, but a lot of early computers packaged with it were XP compatible only and the drivers were hacked to work in Vista. I had a Vista laptop that I had to upgrade to XP to make it run right. $80 OEM copy that I did not want to buy but needed for a functional computer.. My main box runs Win 7 and OpenSuse 2013 dual booted. Works great.

It's interesting because my laptop is an Acer and had Vista, and that's how I discovered they hacked some drivers to make them work in Vista. It never ran well with Vista and why I added XP

Bob, did both the cache dump and restore...no improvement.

Three points of note here:

1. I'm finding that the only site on which this is noticeable is Iboats!
2. The delay appears to be a script running on each page.
3. Now I'm seeing it with Firefox as well.

This is crazy!

You are going to find as the scripts and programs on the net change and upgrade that you will start seeing odd things happening on more than just this website. I installed XP on both of our Vista machines when I first started seeing abnormal behavior on the net and it cured my problems, now one of those machines has been upgraded to win 7. The net is a living environment and one simple change in how your computer interacts with it can cause a whole bunch of problems.

I very seldom use wine but it is there if I need it.

im a beer guy, but if wine will make my pc seem to run faster.....im gunna try a glass or two!!!

Well guys, I'm almost as disgusted with myself as I am with Javascript. Yeah, it's Javascript that's been interfering with everything I do on Chrome and Firefox. Disabled and I've got a new computer - at least as far as browsing goes.

I don't know why this suddenly became such a dominant problem, nor exactly what I'm giving up by disabling the function, but least of all do I understand why something like Javascript is allowed/designed to run wild on some webpages. It was stopping me cold on this site as well as certain newspapers I read online.

I nearly reloaded my OS, thinking that I was infected with spyware that I couldn't detect. Nope, just script from Java running out of control.

As on OS gets older, the compatibilities issues get bigger, I normally shut off Java and make flash where I have to ok a certain video or ad to run, I just get a black f, if I click on it, then it will activate and run the feature.
