After trying everything except thermo-nuclear devices, I finally found a trap that bags these little pests.

It's called "The black hole". It's a spring type-trap with a cable that grabs them. I don't remember who makes the trap.

I catch them 99% of the time now.

I don't follow the instructions to the letter however. They recommend that you leave the opening clear so the gopher thinks his tunnel has been breeched.
I instead cover the entire trap with dirt (careful not to get dirt in the fulcrum of the trigger) and then cover the entire hole with a board of whatever to keep animals and light out.

I bagged 2 yesterday that were tunneling to my garden area.

H.

Good-O, Mate!

we use dogs, cats & snakes to keep the gophers in check.

Have you got a viable "mole" solution? these guys are taking over the world in our neighborhood.

Snakes.

The gopher snake is named for its effectiveness in controlling the little #$%^&.

Rattlers are also very good, but don't tolerate handling very well. :D

If people would treat snakes with more respect there would be a lot fewer gophers, rats, mice and other small, mammalian varmints.

For moles, try one of those 'windmill' things that put a thumping vibration into the ground. They actually work, but just drive the moles over into your neighbor's yard. You see then advertised in gardening catalogs. This is a particularly good solution if your neighbors bug you.

Thanks for the tips on the gophers. They just moved in. The neighbor takes care of the woodchucks with his 22. One shotn and no one knows where the shot came from.

My wife has had to deal with moles when doing archaeology. They reek havoc with strata. They used the mole traps. It sticks into the ground above their tunnel with a paddle that sticvks in the tunnel. When the mole hits the trigger, thses sharpened spikes take it out. They sell them in hardware stores. They worked great for her.

Klondike...

The Black Hole traps works on moles too.
You might have to be a bit more vigil however, as the little pests are a bit smaller for the trap, but it will work.

I snared 17 or 18 one year in a place I use to rent. The yard was full of the vermin.
I think I broke several branches in their family tree!

H.

Re: GOPHERS

thanx for the "mole" feedback guys. seems the snakes 'round here, stay pretty full on gophers.
Homerr,
any idea where to find a "Black Hole"?

I'm gonna try the spike trap too. And if i can't drive the li'l beggers extinct, then i'll try drivin'them away with the wind mill.

no, on second thought, i'll run a perimeter of windmills and work on erraticating those within it.

i tried the poison peanuts once. they really work. but it's a complete B!^@# holding their mouths open while you cram the nuts down their throats.

Re: GOPHERS

'Round here, I get them at Bi-Mart stores and a local feed/grain/nursery store: Grange CO-OP.

You can find them on the internet too.
Here's one site:

http://www.crittercontrol.com/catalog/enter.html?target=Moles_zpRatszp_Mice.html

If that doesn't take you straight to the trap, click on the link on the left Moles/Rats/Mice and look for it.

If you get some, you'd better get at least 2. Chances are, you'll find the middle of their tunnel and have to trap each one. I try to just find the single hole where you see the fan-shaped diggings.
Toss some dirt in the trap so it looks like their tunnel. Put the trap very snugly and squarely to the hole, and then cover it with dirt. Remember, you want it to look like their tunnel, and not the life-sucking trap!
Brush some of the dirt away from the trigger and cover the trap with a box, or whatever.
Sometimes you can have activity right away, but I usually wait until the next morning.

H.

I had a cat that was great on moles...she obviously knew where they were, could hear them I guess. She would just be sitting in the yard and all of a sudden would just run and pounce and start digging...didn't take long before she had one. Sorry to see THAT cat get run over. Would be thrilled to death to see the current one meet the same fate as she has ruined about $5000 worth of leather furniture. She of course refuses to leave the safety of the house.
