OK, Here is my boat. A 1972 Slickcraft SS195.
Equipped with a 188HP 302.

I am not sure what outdrive this has.

Also, when I took the prop in for reapir, I was told it was HUGE!!
The prop is a 15 3/4" 17 pitch.

I was told that A 15" 15 pitch would be about right.

I dont know what my WOT RPM's are because my tach don't work (next on the list), But does that sound right?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Got a few questions...

From my research you should be seeing 4600-4800 RPM and the prop size also seems to be right to be in that rang prob near the low end. A smaller pitch will bring it up.

I can only report what I find so please dont take it 100%...perhaps another 888 owner can chime in and comfirm.

I also beleive that is a Alpha 1 Gen 1 drive but that is just from looking at the photo the SN # should shep some light on that

There should be a sticker on the Valve cover that gives the engine specs....but they do get messed up on the years so its hit or miss.

Re: Got a few questions...

The drive is an MC-1 (short for Mercruiser 1 drive). The ratio should be 1.50:1. The '888" was a Ford 302 with a 2 bbl carb and Mercury used them from 1972 to 1976.

The drive is completely interchangeable with all drives up to 1990. Upper and lower are also interchangeable, but internal parts are generally not interchangeable.

WOT revs should be 3800-4200.

You can DOWNLOAD the service manual for your engine and drive....

Re: Got a few questions...

I dont figure I did too bad, Traded for a shotgun.

This is my first boat, I grew up with the family always having a boat, this is the first I've owned.
And although the boat seems to run fine at non WOT conditions, it backfires through the carb at WOT. In the next few days it will be getting new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Hopefully it will help that condition out.

I found this site a bit too late, I did a poor winterizing job and Blew a freeze plug.

I got a Neoprene, collapsible one ( This boat will never see salt water) and got it all buttoned up today. Ran it (with muffs) for about 20 minutes, no leaks, no seepage. I got very very lucky.

My prop will be repaired in a week, and I will be on the water.

I will be getting a spare prop, should I try the 15" 15 pitch for this boat?

We will be using this as mostly a pleasure boat, pulling the kids on tubes, and fishing ( installing a trolling plate on the outdrive to get around 1MPH).

Thanks for the help.

Its really hard to say what a 15x15 prop will do since you cant get a WOt RPM reading. The prop size will effect it.

Howdy,

1. Poor winterizing jobs don't "blow" "Freeze" (core) plugs expanding ice does, and usually cracks blocks. You may not be out of the woods on that one yet (I'm crossing my fingers for you though!!)

2. Get a new tach while you're waiting for the prop.

3. Don't buy another prop until you've had a chance to ensure that you're all tuned up and running correctly and can get a WOT RPM..... also borrow a hand held GPS if you know someone with one so you can check the speedometer.

4. If you do not know when (or if) the drive lube has been changed correctly (or at all), you probably should do that too.

Regards,

Rick
