I just picked up a free boat someone was giving away. As far as I can tell it's a 15' 1968 Shel Lake boat. It came with a 65hp Merc on it. I can't find a serial number on this thing to save my life. Some information I have found out is that its a Kiekhaefer Mercury and it has Panther G with the numbers 834-3997 stamped on the side of the motor. On the underside of the top cover it says it's a 650 E that was written on there by someone that did service on it. I found 6 different numbers on it but none that seem to be a serial number. Is it hiding under something or where else can I look for it? Any help would be much appreciated as I'm new to boat motors but look forward to getting my hands dirty on this one. For the price I've paid so far I can't go wrong.

Matt, I'm not much more experienced than you on outboard motors, but I did learn while rebuilding my motor that there was what looked like a shiney freeze plug on the motor that had the serial no stamped on it. It also matched the number that is on the motor bracket on the outside of the trasnsom. I don't know if your engine will be the same as mine, but that is how mine worked

I have a 1966 65hp 4cyl. Merc. The serial number on mine is on the shaft housing where the motor attaches to the transom mount. Email me if you would like me to send you a picture. Hope this helps, Mike

If you could send a picture that would be great. Like I said I thought I looked everywhere but if you can pin point where I should be looking with the picture that would help. Thanks
