I got a v8 engine with a v8 out drive and wouldn't go into reverse, a mechanic said that the lower unite and shift cable is broke so I picked a complete v6 out drive. Will it fit?

Welcome aboard - need more info: what year and HP are ya' talking about.

Generally the gear ratios are different. The unit may attach, but the boat won't run right.

No - complete drive will not work, but the lower half could possibly be a match. If the drive you bought is from late 1980 or the early 1981, then the lower half and shift cable will be identical in every way to a 1979 V8 lower.
The upper gearbox will have a different gear ratio in it and will not work behind a V8.
If the purchased drive is any newer than 1981, then it will be a different beast. If the new one has a zinc anode behind the 6 idle relief holes above the prop, you'll have some conversion issues to even use the lower. The lower can work for you, but you'll need some more parts to make it shift properly.

you'll need an ESA module and wiring harness connected to the engine's ignition system, along with the switches at the shift converter box to trigger it (It helps you shift out of gear to neutral with the newer lower) and I'm not sure if the shift converter housing itself is different somehow. OMC did a program to convert some in the 80's, I see on converted boats the whole converter box having been changed where the shift cable installs, but I can't really see the difference.

I'm not sure if anyone has a kit part number or a list of part numbers.
