I got the beast home. 140 Johnson. Seems to be very complete. Looked into cylinders before starting home with it and pistons didn't look coked so that was good. Sprayed deep creep in it on the way back to let it soak. Will do TCW oil today...and for the next few days till I get my manual. Seems to have good compression from just turning it over by hand slowly...ie, no easy spots or light spots...very consistent when turning. Will do a compression test but will get it running first....well started..lol. Powerpacks look new...one I know is new...its a CDI. The coils look rough though. Will be testing all this soon with a peak voltage meter. This is the 140 Johnson I bought that a mech told owner the boat was trash and the compression was good on motor but needed rewiring. Picked it up cheap. Okay, to the question..Is this a 1979? mod# 140TL78C serial# J4991022 Thanks for your help and whatever year this is what do you guys think of these engines?? Thanks again!! Will keep you informed on her.

okay, your right, I'm stupid...lol. 78 is in the model number can't believe I didn't catch it. Is the 78 much different from the 79?? I believe I've read that 78 was the last year of alot of diffent things and were changed in 79. Is that true?? I like knowing history on things...how about the 78?? It has a black block?? Is that correct?? Also the cowl has the big johnson 140 and seahorse "stickers" on it..I didn't think those came out until 79...is that true?? Just any information...good or bad that you guys have on these will be appreciated... thanks again!

The original block would have been painted white, same color as the engine. the model number on the transom bracket should match the model number stamped on the small round core plug on the top of the block head. If it matches, you know you have the original block.

the block is black, but it has started chipping and is white underneath..I wonder if its been rebuilt?? Guess we'll see. I'll check that core plug when I get home today...where exactly is it?? Do you think the 1978 140 manual will be sufficient if its not the original block?? How many years span that I could use a 1978 manual and still be fairly informed?? Thanks alot!

Look on the top rear of the motor, it will be about the size of a quarter.
