Finally got the boat in the water today. The main problem I had was I couldn't run the boat with the cover on. It was like it chokeing itself, removed the cover and it would do fine. It did seem to be a little sluggish on the throttle up though. Plus, I went through about 8 gallons in around 3.5 to 4 hours. Is this normal? We ran pretty hard after we got going. The motor is a '88 Force 125. This was the first time ever taking a boat out by myself. The main thing is why would I have to run it with the cover off? Just want to get it ready for the weekend after next.

Thanks

Re: Got it in the water!!!!

You might want to check your rubber exhaust boot down in the mid-section below the powerhead. ;)
If its blown out or leaking, etc then your exhaust is filling up your cover with....well, exhaust rather and overcoming the air that is in the air. This can definitely shut down the motor and I believe its happened here before.
My two bits.:)

Do I need to drop the l/u to check this. Not really sure where this is located.

take the cover off and look down the back of the motor (just below the head) and you will se a rubber bellow ,thats it ,if it is torn or anyway but strait that is your problem not idling with the cover on

When is the last time you decarbed your engine? If you don't remember then now is a good time to do it.

Either the air passages are blocked or the rubber boot is leaking leaking like Bigprarie said.
Those older motors had a foam lining which frequently would get loose and clog the carbs. If this is part of the problem:make sure you get ALLLL of the foam from the engine compartment.Remove it anyway. It makes almost no difference in noise level. This has caused a lot of motor failures. Good luck J

I'll second what Jerry said about the foam. I have the same motor as you, and all the foam is removed and it runs like a top. Wife even bragged how quiet it is.

Re: Got it in the water!!!!

I was reading in another post that there is an exhaust seal in the lower unit that will sometimes be left out or messed up upon putting the lower unit back on. I've never had the lower unit off since I just bought the boat but, I was wondering if anyone knows what the replacement number might be so I could order one. The bellow running to the pee holes is intact and didn't seem to be cracked or broken anywhere. Just a thought.
