Just wondering where the water is supposed to spit out on a '62 Johnson Seahorse 40HP?

The exhaust is the top big hole then there are 2 little holes below it, are these the pee-holes?

I looked when it was running but didnt see any water coming out anywhere? But then again i'm not sure where to look?

THe impellor is good so maybe something is clogged somehwere, can i remove the thermostat and spray water down there with a garden hose? will that get water through the system to remove anything that might be blocking it?

BTW: Thanks for everyones help and tips on getting this thing started. it seems to run and idle really smooth.

I don't think a 1962 Johnson 40hp had a pee hole per se. The water came out the exhaust relief (the thumb sized hole in the back of the middle unit) in a spray and also out the exhaust below the water. But you should see a spray coming out.

i have it started in a garbage can so i cant see anything below the cavitation plate. Is this thumb sized hole on the middle unit above the cavitation plate?

BTW: When i removed the thermostat after i was running it had had water moving through it. And in that cap that covers the thermostat, this is a good sign rite? This means the motor is getting cooled?

Although the head i could hardly touch just after i ran it it was so hot.....

replace the impeller and/or the waterpump assy...
it may "look good" and move water at idle but change it anyway if it is more than 2 years old..
the rubber gets hard and can't keep up with the RPM'S

ok thanks guys, after i ran the engine i removed the thermostat cap and there was water all in there. does that mean its getting cooled?

by the way, how can i, lets say, "flush" the coolant system? if i remove the stat and spray water down there with a garden hose would that be enough to remove anything blocking it?

There is no 'pee hole' on the motor.

The big hole on the back, not far below the cowling, is an exhaust relief hole (if I am remembering my 40HPs correctly). If the thermostat's working, expect nothing there when the motor is cold, a light mist as it warms up, and a heavier 'rain' when it's warmed up & at higher throttle settings.

Your motor may be fine. The motor is supposed to get fairly warm, due to the thermostat (as opposed to the Merc 500s). I don't know what the thermostat opening temp is on the 40HPs. In general, if the outside of the head & cylinders reaches 170 degrees, it's too hot. That's good & hot, IMHO. Most people can put their finger on there for 2-3 seconds, then have to pull away. You can get 'heat sticks' at your local OMC dealer if you want a closer test.

I'll respectfully disagree with 'middleground'. I can't rest my fingers for several seconds on an OMC with a properly setup thermostat. To my fingers, those walls are pretty hot. Most of my experience is with 1980s-90s V4s.
