Hurricane Irene was approaching. I wasn't too worried about the winds, but the storm surge had gotten me thinking about the tide heights. The marina I berth at for the summer doesn't have floating docks, and I'm 30 miles away, too far to keep checking. So I figured, what the heck...I'll just have them pull the boat and put it on the hard deck for safe keeping. I won't have to worry about the tides and maybe I'll check the zincs anyway...

No issues with the tides, but when I pulled the boat ...Barnacles!! Apparently, there is some strange runoff this year which isn't agreeing well the the unpainted steel under my boat! I have never had this happen at this marina before, and I'm here every summer. Millions of little barnacles covering my shafts, props, trim tabs and rudders! I can't even imagine why everything still worked (sorry, no pics). Spent the next day scraping shells to get everything back down to smooth surfaces. The guy who runs the marina told me that they were having a problem this year with all of the boats there. I asked him why he didn't inform me earlier and he aplogized, offering to paint all surfaces with anti-fouling paint, no charge (since I already did the scraping work). He also said he would pull the boat again for free prior to leaving so I could double check everything before the trip.

Not sure how much potential damage was averted by this, but all-in-all, I guess I came out ahead.

You have yourself a keeper there, Fireman!

We have a problem every summer here in South Florida because the warmer waters promote more growth. I dive every month to keep bottoms clean, especially the running gear. One captain swears by "Prop Speed". I've never used it, so don't know much about it.

I'm sure your intakes and cutlass bearings are happier now.

If you want to name the marina.......I'll put it in my log book.

Good Day!
