Got reverse and no forward

i replaced my water impeller and gaskets. i put the drive in frorward, like i read on this forum page. everything slide to gether nicely. put boat back in water and now only got reverse. how do i get forward back. did not hacve the lower unit in forward. or did it shift in to reverse while i was putting it together? i have a 1987 165 mercruise with am alpha one out drive. its a 3.7 liter 470. please help

drop the lower and make sure the lower unit is in full forward(splined shaft fully clockwise), align shift shoes so they mate up ,tighten nuts.

Yup! Turn the lower shift shaft(foot0 clockwise til it stops. It should be pointing at 12 o'clock. Now, turn the prop COUNTER clockwise til IT stops. Put a strong bungee cord on the prop to keep it pressing on the stopped position. This is putting pressure on the gears and forcing the shift shaft to stay in the forward position.

Now put it together. Sometimes the drive shaft splines don't line up in which case you have to force the prop to turn counter-clockwise to re-align the splines

This is all assuming you did have it in forward when you took it apart. If not you had to force it off and damaged the shift shaft or foot.

i have tried this. i did have it in forward when i took it apart. when i go to put it back together it pops back out of forward. witch way is my prop suppost to turn in forward. i was told clock wise.. i just need to get it fixed before we go camping.
