I purchased a 1971 12? Chrysler Aluminum boat for $175, which included a Minn Kota 27 lb thrust trolling motor. Separately, I purchased a 2007 Briggs & Stratton 5 hp 4 stroke for $350 (used once, runs great).
The darn boat leaks (only a little bit ? maybe a gallon an hour) and is rather ugly. What do you expect for the price, right? I have pretty much come to the conclusion that I would like to carpet the inside or coat with a non-skid rubberized coating and remove the majority of the paint from the outside, going down to bare metal below the rivet line.
So, a couple questions:
1. I have read through about 20 pages of forum topics so far, including the projects by DJ and Mr.Stuart and have not seen anything about leaving the aluminum bear. Once you strip the aluminum (sanding, oven cleaner, whatever) do you have to coat it with something to avoid corrosion?
2. The paint on the inside is relatively in tact other than it is badly oxidized. I can blast the oxidization off pretty well with my power washer, but what steps other than that should I take prior to carpet/rubber?
3. Carpet v. Rubber?
4. Sealing the rivet lines ? a buddy of mine said that he has found that aluminum gutter sealer works great. Has anyone ever done this? I am almost sure that it would need to be done repeatedly. I have plans for Gluvet in the future, but need to decide on the inside coating first.
I appreciate any thoughts and advice. I will get pictures going soon.
