Got the boat out today More problems

Hi guys<br />What do you think, motor run perfect with no water running though engine, as soon as i put water to it starts to miss and will die unless i give it gas<br />driving around motor runs great and NO water in Oil<br />I thought cracked head or head gasket, did compression check 160 to 170 every cyl<br />what do you think??<br />Thanks

Running without water is a sure way to destroy an impeller in less than 30 seconds.<br /><br />

as soon as i put water to it starts to miss

If at idle, you may be getting water in the cylinders due to a miss. Thus sucking water back into the cylinder and fouling the spark plugs or just a leaky riser gasket or bad manifolds or risers.<br /><br />

NO water in Oil

Not surprised. The water is going into the cylinders and then out the exhaust. The water would have to leak past the rings to get into the oil, and with 160 psi compression, that ain't happening.<br /><br />Time to inspect the risers, manifolds and gaskets for leaks.

I know about the impellers i just unhook the Belt before starting it, I just did a rebuild on the water pump no way i'm burning it up, now the exhaust is in my opion is in bad shape i tryed to fix 1 with very little luck was still leaking water out around one of the Flanges with new gaskets and a ton of high temp silicone i had to weld a few holes shut i did pressure check them and no leaks, but i could not check all the pieces of the Manifolds 4 pieces on each side, I just ordered new manifolds off eBay<br />Sierra 18-1997-1 with 18-1999 riser i hope they work.<br />I picked this 1968 Mark Twain up at the Police auction here in Omaha for $300 it has a 327 Merc Motor (chevy v-8)the interier is in perfect shape the floor is good no soft spots couple holes in the bottom of boat because some moron used 3 inch drywall screws to screw the seats down, i fixed all them can't even tell where they were the boat handled real good and had alot of power only a few things wrong the water pump was burned up the manifolds are bad the stern leaks oil in the lower end i have the seal for that and new Manifolds on the way. The stern is a II drive rated at 225 to 325 HP says on the side it's a Kiekhaefer Mercury<br />The Water Pump is not in the Stern it's on the side of the motor.<br />Thanks

i would be real sure the drive is in good shape before investing big money in the motor 1968 drives are not allways reall happy about comeing apart<br /><br />tommays

Along with the not coming apart, the parts are all NLA (No Longer Available) from Mercruiser, which means you may or may not be able to find someone, someplace that actually has parts to fix it with. Or the special tools to do it with.

I drove it around for about an Hour it makes no noises and seems to be tight, I know about the NLA<br />but so far i haven't had any problems getting Parts<br />Maybe i'm just Lucky, I did find someone Local that had the tools for the II drive the Lower end needs to be press apart to put a seal in it i was going to do it myself but he said $30 and 3 days, so i took it apart and took it to him the Price Sounded good to me, i will see
