Re: Gov'ment out of control

Hello to all my republican friends. So what else is new????
In the Eighties and Nineties the republican party made no secret of its intention to decrease taxes and at the same time increase deficits. The goal in this case was and still is what is called :"Starving the beast",or in other terms, emptying out the treasury to the point where the social programs can no longer be supported and thus making these programs dissappear. No this is not some leftist hogwash!!!.This was part of the 1996 plan that was formulated by the republican author of "the Contract with America" Newt something(I forget his name). He had to leave his high and mighty morals spouting seat in Congress after he was caught in the wrong bed.The plan seems to be alive and working well.

Re: Gov'ment out of control

One problem with your theory Rolmops, the Democrats controlled congress throughout the Reagan years. For that matter, until '94, they had controlled congress for 40 years or so.

According to the civics I was taught, spending comes from congress. The President only presents his plan.

Clinton 'reduced' the deficit by refinancing it into short term notes at lower interest rates. Had Gore won the election, he would have faced the same problems, the notes came due and had to be refinanced at a higher rate.

The SS security fund has been being robbed by both parties for decades. Blaming it on just the Republicans or Democrats is insane, they are equally guilty.

twidget is right. Both parties should be ashamed of their actions. Each party has their own little pet programs that they refuse to give up. These programs benefit very few people.

However, is operating in debt a bad thing? Why? Look at the benifits. Our debt is owned by many nations. They profit off of the USA. This spreads the wealth throught the world.

Ken

Bummer would be if they ever called the notes.

I like the idea of putting congress on SS like the rest of us. It would be fixed in record time.
