GPH (Gallons per Hour) guage/meter

I have a GPH guage on my boat that shows how much gas each of the engines is using. It has always worked fine up until now. All of the sudden the needles satrted rapidly fluctuating and the digital read-out at the bottom alternates between showing "E 0.0" and "DCY". The total gallons used keeps resetting to 0.0. Any ideas as to what is causing this?GPH.jpg

More than likely the in-line flow sensors have gone bad or have "stuff" trapped in them. Pull them and take a look.

Pardon my ignorance, but where would I find them and what do they look like?

Differnt boats, different locations. They should be mounted in the fuel line, somewhere between the fuel filters and the motors. Mine are mounted directly behind the fuel filter.

They will have a wire running coming off them. If worst comes to worst, you can always follow the cable back from the gauge.

DO NOT blow compressed air through them unless you want to buy new ones. There are delicate turbine wheels inside the transducer. Simply blowing very gently into them will tell you whether the turbine wheel is spinning or not.

If your total GPM readout keeps resetting, it's an electrical issue. That is normally reset by a push button switch which disconnects all power to the gauge, allowing it to reset. If your inline sensors were clogged (which they may be), usually the needle reading would drop off and stay at zero. Also, what are the chances that both needles would start acting up with a clog at the same time? The sensors are located just after the fuel filter but before the carb/fuel injector system.

Check for a bad ground or power feed to the gauge first.

I found the sensors but they are hard to get to. Since I agree that it would be strange for them to both clog at the exact same time, I am going to pull the guage and look far an electrical issue. I have not seen any kind of reset switch, but I will look when I pull the dash.

Your reset switch should be just a black or silver/chrome round button on the dash. If you press and hold for 3-5 seconds, it will reset the total GPH to zero.
Mine looks like this:
