GPS only shows a grid and not maps?

The boat I recently got came with a Humminbird/Matrix 17 I am guessing from 2004 when the boat was new. I bought the GPS receiver and mounted it on my boat. I got to the lake, and it only shows me a grid. How do I get maps for this unit? The speed was working and it showed the directions I went. But not the lake I was on! This is a very populer lake too! I read thru the book and it shows a lake in one the pictures but I didnt see anywhere where it talks about maps/mapping.

Please someone help me!!! hahah

You can try giving Hummingbird customer care a call at: 1-334-687-0503. I suspect you may need a memory card with a chart on it or you may need to download it directly to the unit.

What GPS Receiver did you attach? GR16 GPS Receiver?

From the looks of the Matrix 17 OWNERS MANUAL; The unit is a sonar only display.
The GR16 Manual seems to indicate it adds only Grid, Way-point and Bread Crumb tracking. No Maps!
