Re: GPS Question

Hi, Squirt.

Nope, no subscription, taxes pay for the service.

Tell us what you want to do with a GPS and what you want it to do for you. Then we can give you some advice.

You can get a lot of info on Garmin.com.

Good luck. :)

Re: GPS Question

Be sure to consider the Magellan meridian. It has high end features with a low end price. Extremely expandable.... :)

Re: GPS Question

Yes...you can send me $25 per month for use of the satalites ;) Seriously, like JB said, there isn't a charge to receive the signal.

I have a low end Garmin GPS12 and it meets my needs although I would love one with more stuff on it. I use its tracking feature and it records where you have been and displays this as a map line on the screen. You don't get any land/water map features like a higher end charting GPS. You can use your PC to download waypoints to the GPS. You can also "mark" places of interests (good fishing spot, nice cove for lunch/swimming, etc). I do this and upload these points back to my PC. Then when heading to a lake, I download all the waypoints I want for the lake I'm headed to. I also upload the tracks I run to a PC program called Street Atlas just to be geeky and see where I boated on a map. Here's a closeup example of some tubing we did last Monday.
