Hi everyone, I know this topic has been discussed a lot, and I've searched and read what seems like hundreds of threads about GPS units on boats. There was one single thread that mentioned an auto gps unit being used on the water. But it escapes me in my search for the name of the unit.
Here is my situation, wants, desires and maybe someone may be able to help.

My location will be an inland lake.
I'm wanting a gps unit that will show my position on the lake in color. (Like if you pulled up google earth and zoomed in, you can see the lake and see my dot on there)

Depth is not important, speed isn't important, contours, etc..

I just need to know where exactly on the map I am..

Bread crumbs would be nice, but I don't need to mark points or chart anything.
Don't need voice or directions or anything else..

I'm thinking the name I remember was StreetPilot III or something like that, but I don't remember :(

Any help would be appreciated it..

Oh, PS.. This would be only used on my boat, not in the car, or hiking.

Thanks everyone!

Re: Gps

There bread crumb feature is called a track or track line. It will show where you have been. Any GPS including a hand held for hiking will have that feature. I am not sure of an auto one would have it or not. If you want a GPS with a map then look at chart plotters. They will run a few hundret dollars. Make sure it includes the maps. I have seen people buy one for $299 only to discover that they need to spend $100 more on the maps for the GPS. If you don't want to spend several hundret on a plotter than perhaps you can use a car GPS but I don't know if it will have the track line and it will more than likley die when you get it wet. My recommendation would be fork out the cash for a proper chart plotter or buy something like a garman etrex. All you really need is the course line to get you back home. With that said it should be an aid to your navigation.

Also if you just want to see a spec on the map you can use google maps on your smart phone. There if an app called mariner marine that is a free plotter for your smart phone.

EDIT: The app is called MX Mariner - Marine Charts

Re: Gps

Thanks for the reply. If you use your smart phone and click find my location, it shows you your exact location, land, water, etc.. And it has real time movements.
That really is the only feature I'm looking for in a GPS.
If I have a smart phone with a data plan I could easily use that, but I don't :(
