I have a 230 Gulfstream with twin Yamaha 150's (1993) I am thinking about repowering or selling and buying another hull with newer engines. One of the motors needs a lower unit and I have to decide to spend the 4-5 hundred bucks to find one and keep dumping a grand a year in repairs or go for a new pair of outboards that can be put up for 3-4 months at a time.

If I go with repower I want something with much better fuel economy.

Any help in making this decision is appreciated

Guess it all depends on your wants and needs. If you have owned the boat for a while, you may have footitis anyway. The market is very good right now for buying a larger boat. Downside is the market is bad to sell a boat in.

The gulfstream is a great all around boat but a 25 to 30 footer would be even nicer with newer motors that don't suck fuel.

Depending on the hours on the motors and the condition on the boat, thats really what would be my deciding factor, but you will have your own veiws and I don't think anyone can make this decision for you.

I would say replace the lower unit if your going to sell, noone wants a boat that size that they can't sea trial. It will help your sale. The grady will sell for sure, just need to find the right buyer. I'm sure you have already been on the grady site, what have they said?

I'm sure that didn't help a whole lot, the crowd should be along shortly with probably much better advice.

Drop a pair of F150's on it and save 30% in fuel right off the bat.

If thats the 23' Grady w/ the 9.5' beam, nice boat. I don't think a 25' w/ 8.5 beam offers much more room, and a 27' is a big step up. If you love the boat, repower w/ HPDI's or 4-strokes, but it's going to take years to recoup the cost of new engines in fuel savings. "Dingbat's" older, carbed Ocean Pro is still going strong. Good luck !!!

well, nice said, but when he talkes about some hundred bucks for a ( used ) lower unit , just dropping a pair of ( new?) f150 on it might be not an option here.

thanks for all the responses

Was also considering the Evinrude E-tec, any additional thoughts on that. other than replacing controls and such

The newer direct injected 2-strokes are about as efficient as 4-strokes, usually a little cheaper, and a little less weight.
