Re: Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

Ray the grand canyon of Pa. is real nice. If you go make sure to stay in Wellsboro it is right up the road from the GC. The town has street lights that burn natural gas, they are really cool to see, it is the cleanest nicest little place and there are some nice places to stay.

While you are up there take a ride to the kinzua railroad bridge, it is awesome, at one time the highest railroad bridge in the world. You used to be able to walk out on it, but a fierce wind storm blew the middle section down this spring :( . I have not been there since this happened but it would still be neat to see.

If you want to drive a little farther look on your map and head to Benazette. That is where the elk heard of Pa. hangs out. They have a few areas where they show up every day and you can get a good look at them.

You wont be disappointed in this area of Pa.

What Flahthead said. Wellsboro is always decorated so nicely for Christmas and sometime in February they have a cool "winter festival". You will love the town, the scenery, and most importantly, the windy roads, especially with the new sway bar!

Ray, Horseshoe Curve is 40 miles North West of me, it is still in operation, with museum et al. You can still purchase tickets to ride around the horeshoe. It is pretty spectacular. Then, for the railroad enthusiast, there is another railroad museum in Altoona, about 10 miles from the horseshoe. Pretty neat place, and right beside the Benzel Pretzel Factory.

Then head east on route 22 to Huntingdon and visit the Swigart Museum. He has some neat cars - a couple of Tuckers, "Herby the LoveBug", etc. Raystown Lake is in Huntingdon, beautiful 30 mile long lake. Lincoln Caverns is here also, which is a neat visit. And while in the area, I can show you lots of curvie roads and we visit for a bit.

Re: Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

Here in NY we've got Letchworth State Park, known as "the grand canyon of the east". I went to school at Geneseo, only a few miles away...what a sight, I go back all the time now...3 waterfalls, huge gorge, etc. Anyone know how it compares to this canyon in PA?

Also, what's the deal with this boat accessible cavern? Anyone have any more info, personal experience?

Not too far Ray, About 4 hours from Philly to Pa. grand canyon. If you are interested I know some back ways to go, not faster but more scenic.

Re: Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

absolutely interested, Ill have to take a weekend with liz and head on up thar, digital camera in hand

I love scenic vistas, the tough part is going to be keeping her from lighting up in the truck, lol, I guess ill bring the flogger with me to keep her in line, <EFG>

As for me, well, Ill be so busy looking and driving and taking pictures to worry about a **** cigarette

I envision LOTS of stops, lol, ten exhales before getting back in!

:p

PS my first time in the mountains with a girlfriend was Marti down in the Smoky mountains in a 2001 Bonneville SSE, another two ton slot car, we were heading to the top of Mt Mitchell, highest mt in NC

She was turning a definite shade of green halfway up, and we drove into the clouds at the top and had to turn back, it was impossible to see

I tested the 3800 V6 on the way up, and the four wheel discs on the way down, lol, what a car, what a car, what a car

Interesting note about that tin indian, it went from Charlotte NC to Cherry Hill NJ on a single tank of gas, 543 miles worth, including sitting in a traffic jam for two hours, running at over 100 mph and the AC blasting the entire way

pulled down 34.7 mpg, my VEGA never got mileage like that, and this thing was quiet as a limosine and as fast as a rocket, great car, I would have loved to have bought THAT thing when it hit the used car lot - but I basically hate cars for long term use, too limited. The Vega was an exception, it had a fold down rear seat, and a hatch that basically turned it into a mini pick up, I packed 57 cinder blocks into the thing one time, filled the passenger footwell, the seat, the rear footwells, the entire back, lol, my buddy Chris and I found a pile of them at a construction site near his house. the poor little guy looked like a low rider, but did ok, braking was interesting tho ... jeeze, the crazy things I used to do!

Penns Cave is neat because it is toured by boat, but the formations are not that spectacular. Some nice trout in the lake the cave flows into, though. It is a little north east of State College, PA (about 20 minutes drive), and about 40 minutes from Indian Caverns, which is 20 minutes from Lincoln Caverns, which is 15 minutes from Swigart Museum. Start your planning!

Bay, I'm originally from Upstate NY and had never heard of Letchworth State Park. Of course I moved to Texas when I was 23. I did a search and found the homepage, it is absolutely beautiful. I will recommend it to my family since its only a couple of hours from them. Glad you mentioned it. :)

Ladyfish..yeah, I've lived here (east of Syracuse)all my life and never heard of it until I went to school out there. It is a really nice place...I've always wanted to take the hot-air balloon ride over the gorge, but haven't yet. Last I was there, they do close off the middle section of the roadway that follows the gorge once the snow flies though...and according to the weather, that'll be this weekend!

Re: Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

In the glove box of the impala I found a brochure for of all things, the

GRAND CANYON OF PENNSYLVANIA

"the PA Grand Canyon is 50 miles long and 1,000 feet deep; it embraces 300,000 acres (!) of state owned forrest land in northcentral Pennsylvania. Laced with deep valleys and rock tumbling streams, the lookout points along the canyon furnish awe inspiring views"

etc etc etc

abundant wild turkey BLACK BEAR and white tailed deer

lol, I dunno, I would have the ol dubble barrel with turkey shot in one and a slug in the other, and hope it stops a black bear, I would take on most any human, but a bear would play with me like a rag doll! I wonder if you can hunt turkey with a 44 AutoMag strapped to you side, lol
