I have a 90hp 1995 Mariner. When I checked the lower unit oil today it was silver colored.
When I bought the boat last year the oil was thick and gray. I replaced it and checked it after a few times out and it was milky colored, so I had the seals replaced. When I changed the oil this spring it was it was ok(tea colored).I have a bad feeling about this. Any feedback would be appreicated.

Pop the Brg carrier out of the gearcase and have a look inside.

This will eliminate any guessing

TMD

Captengine44,

Lower units are pretty simple and tough. They can withstand a little water ingestion and not be hurt. The trick is to not let the water sit in the L/U for any length of time.

The most common point of water intrusion is the fill/drain plug seals/gaskets. They should be replaced every time the plugsare removed for service.

If you are storing your boat for the winter, drain and refill the L/U, replace the seals and check it next spring after your first run.
