well she's in the water now, and just now did I realize I forgot to check for grease points when I was changing the gear oil:grumpy:

Id like to get in there and grease my steering swivel point, and anything else that might have a grease fitting. Can it be done in the water and if so where are the fittings located? I did notice my steering was a bit stiff at low speeds.

this is an 85 model stinger 400.

Re: Grease fittings

There are two grease fittings on the tilt trunions, behind the rubber snubbers on either side of the drive. Those need to be pried off when in the drive is in the down position. They simply snap over two screw heads that are on the each of the trunion caps. I like to put a little silicone grease in each one of the bumper holes that snap over the screw heads when reinstalling. It keeps the screw heads from chewing up the holes in the rubber caps.

The other grease fitting on the outside of the boat is facing down, underneath the steering gear where it is located at the rear of the intermediate housing. Where as you might access the trunion fittings while in the water, good luck with the outside steering gear fitting. You do scuba?

The only other fitting is tight to get to. It is on the intermediate housing, inside the boat, at the forward end of the steering shaft that your TrueCourse steering drum rides on. You access it parallel to the floor of the boat, a few inches forward of the inside of the transom. It is between the forward side of the steering drum and the intermediate housing where the shaft terminates.

Although those are both important fittings for ease of steering, especially if your boat sits in the water all the time, they are not the only potential cause of tight steering. The inside of your double cable way steering cable may need to be lubed. That happened to my 1975 20 footer and I really had to strong arm the steering wheel in turns.

If you have power steering, there are two grease zerk fittings there. One on part 81 and one on 71:

I keep forgetting that some of the later stringers had a rube goldberg power steering setup.

You go that right! lol. I had to take mine completely apart and then figure out how to put it back together months later when I replaced my engine. Thankfully I took enough pictures but I still have not taken the boat on the water yet to be certain I have it all back together correctly!

....but then we do not know if the poster has power steering. He has not been back to comment on his post since he wrote it.

btw, there is one other zerk fitting that I forgot about. I am not entirely sure how it would affect steering but it is important to grease. That is the swivel bearing fitting found deep inside the hole found on the forward edge of the upper gearcase shroud.

no power steering for me, I took a look and the rear grease fitting is underwater with the drive up. Gonna have to go under.

What fitting was the one that caused overheating or loss of seal somewhere? something about exhaust gases? Is this the one i need to go scuba diving to get to  I can feel the hole on the backside of the out drive when its tilted all the way up, I just need to get a proper fitting grease gun as mine doesn't go into that hole.

Re: Grease fittings

The swivel housing zerk fitting is located about 4" inside that hole. You need to probe with the grease gun to find it. It is straight back in front of the hole. Like I stated, this is an important grease point but I do not think it has anything to do with your stiff steering. Re-read my post above.
