Grease keeping out the exhaust?????

"grease the swivel bearing. impeller is probably sucking exhaust gases.
This is a stringer and the grease is for keeping the exhaust out,"

Saw this on another site.
Guy says the impeller was probably sucking exhaust gases and letting it overheat??
Can someone explain this? Or is it BS??

Easy enough to check out. Install a clear plastic line on the intermediate housing exit fitting, plug the original line going up to the thermostat housing, then run the motor briefly and watch for excessive air bubbles in your plastic line. This will also give you the opportunity to check the flow level from the OD impeller. This is best done while sitting in the water.

There is some info in the manual about servicing the swivel when you replace the pump. I am not sure how important grease is for keeping exhaust gases out. For years I was never even aware that there was a swivel xerk and as such never lubed it. Never had a problem either.

Don't have a stringer drive, was just wondering about the statement about the grease stopping the exhaust??

If you do not own a stringer, why the persistence? I already disclosed that I never greased mine for 25 years and never had a problem with exhaust intrusion into the water stream.

A so called EXPERT on another forum said that it was necessary and like you thought his opinion was all that was needed.
Everyday I learn something new and had never heard of this.
See I have his direction that it's absolutly needed and yours that says NOT!
Don't have a stringer but if I can learn something, I say it's been a good day!
Everyone on the OMC site seems real knowledgable but if you didn't know you had a fitting for 25 years why would I trust your opinion?
Not trying to be smart, just want an answer.

Easy enough to answer. That was because for 25 years of hard use, I never had to do anything to the outdrive except change the oil and periodically grease the other fittings that I was aware of. For the next 9 years (to present) I have had to listen to people rag on OMC's, here on iboats. :laugh: While I had been out playing, they had all been feverishly working on the alignment's, gimbals, gimbal bearings, u-joints, bellows, shift cables, etc, etc.

Also for those same last 9 years, I have gotten more hands on active with my outdrive, ie, removal, impeller, shift cable re-wrap, complete OD assy, removal and reinstallation in boat, etc, etc,.

Suffice it to say that the grease, itself, does not keep exhaust gases out of the water stream. It simply lubricates the two seals in the swivel housing that are doing that job. After 25 years of no added grease, mine did not deteriorate to the state that they leaked. They were, however, replaced in a general teardown service that I had done eight years ago.
