Grease on impeller and water housing

I applied a thin coat of 2-4-c grease to both the water impeller and the water pump housing when I changed my water impeller. I now have no water coming out of the tell-tale when running on muffs (even after letting it run for approx. 2 minutes). I've been troubleshooting this for a while and I have tried everything else that I can think of. Any thoughts on the grease and water pump pressure.

I can't say why you have no pee tube outlet, but the grease isn't the reason. I would be looking for either a clogged inlet section or the passages in the engine being plugged. Grease on the impellor only helps lube it until the water starts moving through it... That is unless you filled the impellor housing with grease. Then you could have priming issues. But a thin coat of grease won't harm anything! JMHO!

Thanks for the reply. I have another post with more detail of my problem and the steps I have taken so far, but the grease was one of the last things I could think might be causing the problem. Additionally, the reason I mentioned it is that I used the mercury waterproof grease. All the posts I found related to greasing the impeller upon replacement indicated using a form of water soluble lubricant (be it grease or soap) and this was a last resort/hope before considering taking more of the motor apart - since the most experience I have has been impeller replacement and routine maintenance.

Are you 100% sure you installed the impeller in the correct rotation position ?? Sounds to me it could be backwards or even your water tube may not be connected.

yzf125, it doesn't matter which way the impellor is installed. Being made out of rubber, as soon as the engine turned over the impellor blades fixed themselves. So that isn't an issue. Now yes the water tube could be not installed, but then water would still be coming out in other places. The only other possibility is what Bill Kubiak suggested about not installing the key way and the impellor is just sitting there while the drive shaft turns...

Bill - yes I installed the key. I've removed the gear house a couple of times now and rechecked the impeller/key/rotation and other things.

yzf125 - I'm sure I have the rotation correct. I am in the process of adding another post asking if I have the correct water pump parts for my outboard. I am having trouble inserting multiple attachments to that post, but I have a photo of the impeller housing with impeller installed.I just tried to attach photo here but I am getting same error (might be problem with the file compression I used...I don't know yet).

gm280 - From what I can tell, I have the water tube inserted into the pump. I even bought a new seal. I can tell by the slight resistance I encounter as I push the gear house in place (I hope that's the resistance). As for water coming out of other places, I can see pressurized water coming out of what appears to be 2 drain holes in the front of the exhaust housing. I don't know if that is normal or not.

Thanks to all for the replies. I started a post relating to no water out of the tell-tale pee hole got not replies. I thought maybe it was because I was too specific with my model of motor and others were not familiar with it (91 Merc 115 outboard). I have more details of what I have been doing with that post.

I wanted to update this since problem is now fixed. The reason I was asking was out of desperation. My problem was the fact that the Merc dealer that I bought the water pump tube seal from gave me the wrong part. The '91 Merc 115 HP uses part number 43023. The part he gave me seemed to be a snug enough fit, but apparently did not seal the water pump to tube connection. I get 8, pounds of pressure now on muffs with the correct.

Okay, thanks for posting back here with your fix for us to read. That helps everybody out when doing similar things. Glad it is all working now as well...happy and safe boating... :thumb:
