Hello ALCON,
I am getting ready to reassemble my out drive back onto the gimbal housing; but before I do so, I want to regrease everything (Yoke, Spline, engine coupler, gimbal bearing, etc). Is it necessary to make a 50 mile one way trip to my "local" boat store and get gimbal grease, spline grease, etc, etc; basically getting each individual grease for each specific application or would it be ok to make a 5 mile trip to my local WalMart and get Marine grease. I also have AutoZone, AdvancedAuto, and O'Rileys available. But I look for the experts answers and recommendations.

Thanks
Gary

Re: Grease - Yoke, Spline, engine coupler, gimbal bearing

You're likely going to get varying opinions but I only buy and use exactly what is recommended for the various parts of my boats:
1-u-joint and gimbal bearing
2-engine coupler and spline
3-24c
4-special lube 101

Not to mention: Perfect seal, bellows adhesive, Merc 25-40 oil, Merc hi-po gear oil (now that's cheaper at Wallyworld)

I just look at it as so many different things can go wrong anyway (especially for us rookies doing our own service) why not use the recommended stuff so that's not a variable?

Then use the OEM stuff that is called for by the Manufacturer. Everything after that is a personal choice.

Keep in mind, Merc has to warranty their product, so the test an recommend what works best for their product so they don't have to pay to fix it when something breaks.
