Greasing the lower unit....

1987 Omc Cobra? There is grease zerks on the lower unit last year I hit them with the grease gun a few times because I didnt know how much was to much or where to look to see if the grease was coming out. any suggestions or ideas?

Toby...the zerk on the starboard side about half way down is for the gimbal bearing which your driveshaft goes through. You can't see the bearing or grease unless you take the drive off. Also taking the drive off is the only way you can grease the 2 u-joints further up the driveshaft.

So do you recommend I take the drive off or just squeeze the grease gun a few times on the zerk for the gimball bearing?

Do you know the history of the boat, when was the last time the drive was off and the u-joints greased? If you don't know then it would be good to take it off, check the gimbal bearing, grease the u-joints, check the shift, drive and exhaust bellows for cracks and either fix them or have them fixed if there are problems. At least then you know where you stand.
