greasing trailer bearings?

Hey folks, I hate to ask this here but I can't find anything on greasing the wheel bearings on the trailer. I have a 1990 escort trailer. I bought some bearing grease and last night I applied it to the zirc fitting until grease started oozing out of the bearings. I'm now wondering if I greased it too much, or possibly ruined the seals. I don't want to take the boat out to test the new fuel pump gaskets until I know for sure the bearings are ok. Also, the hubs are 2 different sizes. The previous owner must have replaced the bearings or hub on one side with some cheap, off brand. The one on the left wheel seems to be a standard size, but I can't find a bearing cover/ protector that will fit the one on the right wheel. 1.98 diameter fits too loosely, and I can't find anything smaller anywhere. And how do I measure the diameter anyway? Is it I.D. or O.D.?
Thanks in advance.

Re: greasing trailer bearings?

I would go ahead and use it.
Get the motor squared away before the boating season is over.

Then tear the hubs down and repack them properly, maybe replace the whole hub assembly(s), then you know you have good spindles, bearings, seals, and can get bearing buddies that will fit.

Make sure you use marine bearing grease, and always use the same type when you top them off. If you mix grease types, they will liquify and it will run out.

Re: greasing trailer bearings?

Doh! Already mixed the grease. Oh well, I'll wory about that tomorow. I went to several auto stores today and only found one bearing and hub set that was smaller. It was 1.781" and when I got home and tried it out, it didn't fit. So 1.98" is too big and 1.781" is too small. Where in the h..l did this guy get this bearing set from?
I didn't have time to take it out today, I'll try again tomorow evening.
Thanks again for all your help Roscoe, It's nice to have a board like this where people are willing to help, taking the boat to the shop can be quite expensive!
