Pulled my brake drums today to inspect the bearings and brake shoes on my new purchase today, and found this mess:

They appear to be 10" Uniservo's from what I can tell. Anybody have an idea how much new shoes are or if the can be relined? The lining is riveted on. Having a hard time trying to find them online. Many thanks in advance for any info.

NAPA used to reline shoes and maybe a truck stop, but thats sort of a lost maintance thing these days.

Right off hand they look like the old standard chev truck shoes.

I pulled my trailer apart and my drum brakes are looking just like yours, your seal went bad, I ordered new seals/ 10" brake assembly and seal wear ring from Waymire Dist.

They were very helpful although the brake assembly is back ordered untill next week

Good Luck

Re: Greasy Brake Shoes

When mine went bad I just looked online at rock auto to see which truck had similar sized drum brakes. I think I replaced them with shoes from some year of Ford Ranger. I wish I would have wrote it down. There aren't that many different sizes, and the shoes are all the same for the most part. Just find the right diameter, and then width.

I also had to replace the brake cylinder. I think it came from a ranger too. Only difference was two pistons compared to a single. That one was more tricky. I remember comparing piston area so it would use the same amount of brake fluid to expand. Again, I wish I would have wrote down the part numbers.

Looks like you are also missing the forward piston rod on your wheel cylinder??

Re: Greasy Brake Shoes

the actuator pushes the one brake shoe which in turn pushes the second brake shoe.

I can't tell from the photo if the front shoe still has a good lining. If so, I'd just get some spray brake clean, replace the leaking seal, and put it back together. If the shoes actually need replacing, I recommend e-trailer.com. They have knowledgeable people who can track down trailer axle/brake parts for you at good prices.

You never want to clean grease soaked linings. Need new ones.

Re: Greasy Brake Shoes

The linings are still good thickness wise, and appear to be new (still has blue striping on them). I called a local boat trailer dealer looking for new shoes, and explained the problem; his response was to clean them with brake cleaner, and scuff up the linings with sand paper.
