Bought a 73 MFG Gypsy with a 65 Triumph on it about two years ago for about $700 for fishing and crabbing. Boat has been out of the water for about 2-Months now and when draining the lower unit today the oil is coming out green like split pea soup. Oil came out cloudy last year but it was not milky white or green. This is the same oil that has been in the unit since last winter through the summer and run about once a week from May to October.

Thoughts? Is this normal for a 40 year old lower unit? Can it continue be run this way? Am I on borrowed time with this lower unit before a rebuild of some type is needed?

Re: Green Gear Oil

Even though it looks like soup, do not eat it. :D

Milky/cloudy oil = water intrusion. So, I would suspect that a seal or something is letting water into the lower unit.

It could be considered 'normal' that a 40 year old LU would leak . . . however not desirable.

Yes that oil has water in it. However not a tremendous amount of water. I'd make sure the fill screws have good/new O-rings/seals on them before pulling the prop seal. Be careful to check that the Prev owner didn't put a new seal on the screw and inadvertently leave the oil seal attached to the hole. i.e. a seal on top of a seal.

Been there-done that

If that 85hp is a electric shift thats the wrong oil anyway as it appears to be the HP oil, you should be running premium blend type c for electric shifts, It its mechanical shift its seal kit /impeller time.

Re: Green Gear Oil

All, thanks for the responses. For now I think I am just going to take the simplest recommendation and get new O-rings and refill with Pennzoil Marine 80W90 Gear Lube, research how to change these seals, if it is a do-it yourself job, or how much it would cost to have a shop do it.

Thanks All.

Re: Green Gear Oil

Better find out exactly what motor you have. If it's a '73 you can get by with what you want to put in it. But if it's a '72 you'll have to put in what Faztbullet said. Post a model # ???

To be clear this is a 1973 65HP Evinrude/Triumph motor. Model # is 65373R. I do not think this an electric shift model but correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Green Gear Oil

It's not electric shift. You're good to go with the oil that you have.
