Hello,
First post here, and let me say that I have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the expertise here about the volvo engines/outdrives. I have used the resource several times.
Ok so basically here is the problem.
I recently purchased an older 250 sportsman circa 1990 with a penta 570 and 290A outdrive. Overall the boat is in excellent shape for its age and the previous owner had spent more than the price I paid in upgrading it over the last 2 years. New wiring, and rebuilding most everything on the boat. The boat looks great, and is mechanically sound for the most part.
Now the outdrive had been totally redone, new bellows, new u joints, etc. The motor started up first time for 6 months and ran beautifully. I will say up front that while I am mechanically inclined, I did not really have a lot of experience with I/O and outdrives or boat engines for that matter. I would like to think that since I have changed a head gasket on a land rover and fabricated my own parts due to necessity that I can follow instruction pretty well and understand the workings of whatever I am working on.
Ok so here is the recent problem. I started to notice water in the bilge, and I began to suspect a faulty drain plug o ring and sure enough, there it was. The threads were also worn badly (plastic) so I decided to replace the entire plug & housing.
So I went to raise up the engine (as I always store it in the down position on the trailer) to make some room to work and SWOOSH..... there goes one of my hydraulic trim hoses, big hole, fluid all over the bilge.
Glad this happened on land.
So I removed the old hose and fittings which were VERY corroded.... I had to cut it because the ends would not spin.
I have the new hose (actually I bought two since I found used ones in excellent condition from freshwater with no corrosion and no cracks or fray in the hose). I have decided to replace only the one hose that burst, and keep the 2nd as a spare for now...in case this happens with the other hose since the other hose is VERY hard to reach.
Now the question is this:
After I put the new hose on..... is there any procedure I need to take before operating the trim?
I assume I need to top off the fluid reservoir, but is there anything else? bleeding? or will it self bleed? (im thinking brake lines here
