I am searching for any information on used/rebuilt Volvo Penta 280 possibly 290 dp/pt gear box's. I was running in from the tower last week and boom, all she wrote.
I can find the gear boxes online but I would like to see what I am getting if possible.

5.7 in a 24 Albe

I have some more questions.

1)The out drive has a "280" marked cover, however, the gear box has a part number of 290000xx. I am unsure if the "290" in the part number indicates it is a 290 out drive.

2) What is the single bolt versus double bolt difference on the gear boxes listed on ebay?

3) P/N on drive is 867800, does this help in the identification?

TYIA,

Rick

Welcome aboard.

the cover you refer to is the shift cover, and was the same on the 270/280/290

there were essentially 2 different transmissions used (upper unit).

on the input housing where the bellows is clamped, there should be a drive serial number and drive identification tag.

my guess is that you ran low on gear lube, probably from a leak. when was the last time you had the drive serviced?

Hi Scott - thanks for the welcome. The boat is new to me and the previous owner "had it gone through recently" I did check the lube dip stick on top and it checked okay. I opened the lower unit screw to make sure no water or milky fluid or metallic pieces came out, again, lube appeared in good condition.

It is my upper gear box.

The upper gearbox has a riveted tag with PZNR - 290000xxx.
I just want to make sure I am looking for a correct replacement. Are the 270/280/290 gear boxes interchangeable? What specifics do I need to be looking for?

Thanks again,
Rick

For the most part they are the same. Get the same vintage.

The transmission is pretty bullet proof on the AQ drives. I suggest you find what went wrong

Unless you have owned the boat from new it can be hard to know what you have for sure on your transmission as you can mix and match most anything from the AQ series outdrives.
Single bolt and double bolt refer to the helmet pin. You will see it in front of the dip stick looking at your drive from the back.
Also make sure your getting the right input shaft spline some have 10 some have 26 but you can change input shaft yokes to be what your PDS has if need be.
Just a guess but maybe your split ring keeper failed. Does the top of your drive have a hole in it?
Post a few pics. We like em and it helps us to help you.

Thats a mess!!
You have a double bolt transmission. Just match that with your input shaft spline count when you buy a different one.

your into a complete drive tear down as the pieces went somewhere.

I scour ebay and CL all the time looking for drive parts, especially since I will be almost doubling the boats power I also have a friend of mine with a complete spare drive that I am trying to talk him out of
