Grey gearcase oil

I checked my gearcase oil today and noticed that it was grey (kinda clear) with a slight smell to it. Is this something that I need to worry about or can I just change it out and have no worries?

If it's not milky, and still semi clear then it should be ok, sounds like it's just got normal wear on it. Change it out if it's time, but make sure you replace the nylon wahsers around both the drain and vent plugs, so you keep any water out.
