I have a 3.0 Alpha 1 I/O Merc. And Everytime i shift it into forward, it grines gears and wants to take off immediately. Any ideas what it could be? Reverse is smooth, and forward really rough. Just don't know what it could be? The gear box? The shift cable might need to be replaced? Anyone experience this?

Re: Grinding Noise during shift

Sounds to me that your shift cable is adjusted biased towards reverse. What is happening is you are not fully shifted to forward when the throttle cable starts moving. That's the "take off immediately". With the engine off, push the throttle to the forward detent (the click like feel just before the throttle cable begins to move). Go back to the prop and spin it in the reverse direction. It should not spin, and instead be locked up. My guess is it will spin and you'll hear a clicking sound which will be the dog clutch not quite fully engaged with the forward gear. Then do this in reverse. You will probably find the prop locked up solid when you try to spin it by hand in the forward direction. If so, have a helper gradually pull the throttle back while you are spinning the prop in the forward direction. As soon as it locks up, have the helper stop pulling back on the throttle. Hopefully, the throttle will not be to the reverse shift detent position yet. If so, then you simply need to adjust the shift cable to shift to forward sooner.
