There was a post about this same problem over a year ago. But there was no suggestions so I'll explain my problem. It will shift into gear alright, however when I go back into neutral there is a grinding noise like it hasn't fully disengaged. It only seems to happen after the outboard is warm, I can't get it to grind when I have it hooked up to the water hose. If I lean the shifter to the reverse direction (in neutral position) The warning horn sounds. Hopefully it's just an adjustment issue. But which way do I adjust? Thank's for any suggestions.

Re: Grinding noise when returning to neutral, 150 optimax

I just had the same problem with a 90 hp mercury. iit was my adjustment. on mine the grinding noise stoped. but now it rakes real loud when going in gear. this other guy told me to make fine adjustments untill i get it right. the bottom cable is your shifting cable. the closer you turn the threaded ball to the end of the cable, will be the more it should be in gear. i'm going to adjust mine to get in all the way in gear. so i'm going to try 2 turns at a time .and then try it. ps. keep up with how many turns you make , so you can go back to where you started if it don't help. hope this was helpful, and may the good lord bless you.
