I bought a 1999 bayliner w/ an 3.0 mercruiser,it had a broken starter bolt, had that fixed and replaced starter along with rear starter bracket to avoid anymore broken bolts because of torques from starter. The first few times I started it on the tralier after this it starter fine, ran it for a while ,then it in the water ran for a little bit ,then died (bad gas) but when trying to start it sounded like starter grinding on flywheel ,after going through this process twice and even thinking the starter was bad and shimming the starter, got to the point where i inspected the gears on the starter and teeth on the flywheel, everything looked fine but now wont even turn over goes right to bad grinding. Even tried to manually turn engine to get to different teeth on flywheel but same thing. I did notice when turning the engine that there was a hard spot when turning so i took out all spark plugs and still has ahard spot when turning. Can someone tell me if there is something internally going on in the engine or something like a bad crankshaft bearing causing the bind.I have read a few post about similar noises and all the other mention a new starter or shims, But I have done both , a boat mec. looked at it and said its inside engine but before i replace it I want to be positive its not and easy fix. Could it be a problem with the outdrive?

Ayuh,... Is the starter engaging the flywheel, at all,..?? is it turning the motor at all,..??
Are the starter drive teeth visably scarred,..?? the flywheel teeth,..??
I'd suspect the bendix drive of the new starter might be bad...

The motor should turn over reasonably freely, with even pressure, with the spark plugs out, 'n the drive off...
Not to sure what ya got goin' on there...
Any crud in the oil,..?? metal,..??

Could ya use a few paragraphs in yer posts to make 'em easier to read,..??

When the starter was replaced, was the solenoid replaced as well. It sounds like the yoke is not moving the bendix fully outward so it can engage the flywheel. If this was a rebuilt starter, many of those so called rebuilders didn't replace shifter yokes. There are two buttons on each side of the yoke and those wear. If they wear too much there isn't enough throw to allow the bendix to engage fully. If there has been a great deal of grinding, then there HAS to be signs of damage on the bendix and flywheel teeth.

Re: Grinding noise when starting 3.0 mercruiser

i bought the boat with a starter bolt broke off, had it drill out, bought a new stater with rear bracket, new bolts then started right up ,took it on the water, rode a while. Then shut it off , gotready to head in and started grinding and has done it ever since.
Thought maybe needed shims, but shimmed it and nothing. the edge of the teeth on the starter gear looks like they are barely hitting the flywheel, inspected the flywheel and it looks good. engine will turn fine manually but not when engaged by starter.

The teeth on the bendix are slightly tapered so they may appear worn when they really are not. Again, if the bendix is not fully engaging, I'd look at the bendix shift yoke and the solenoid. Was this actually a NEW starter or A REBUILT starter. The service dude may have indicated it was new but used the term rather loosely. If the solenoid does not pull in fully, or if the yoke is worn the bendix cannot engage. Nor will this starter function properly if you have a weak battery or bad battery cable connections. And by the way, cables have two ends each so check/clean both ends.

Is this a gear drive starter?

I put the starter on a friends boat with the same exact motor and it worked fine so I am thinking its got to be more than just the starter.
