I recently noticed a loud grinding sound coming from the outdrive. If I lower the unit all the way down it is extremely load and doesn't go away. If I raise the unit slightly the sound goes away completely but returns when I turn the wheel right or left. I share this boat with my mother and we had work done the last two year. I did not use the boat at all last year but noticed the grinding on my trip in June of this year. My mother stated she does not recall any grinding noise last year or earlier this year.

15 months ago - Carburetor was rebuilt, new distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires, and coil
27 months ago - The gimbal housing was worked on/replaced and the throttle cable was worked on. This was due to the engine dying every time I put it in reverse.

I replaced the gear lube and greased the bearings this weekend but the grinding was still present.

This is on a 1985 merc cruiser 350

Probably gimbal bearing is bad. Pull the drive and check
